How often should my horse be massaged?

So you are wondering...how often should you have your horse massaged? Below I outlined different categories that your horse may fall under. I want to emphasize that these are suggestions I am making based on experience through massaging all categories of horses. I will work with you to develop a regimen that works best for what your horse needs.

  • Horses on stall rest, medical lay up or in a rehabilitation program should be massaged based on your veterinarian’s clearance. If your horse is unable to move freely due to confinement a weekly massage can help stimulate circulation, support the lymphatic system and remove toxins that have become stagnant. It is also a great way to keep your horses muscle soft and supple because they may have become stiff. Over-all a massage can increase the disposition of your horse.

  • Horses getting back into shape after a period of inactivity can be scheduled prior to resuming activity and after as needed. It is dependent on how well your horse recovers and what type of work they will be doing. This can be evaluated initially and customized to fit your horse’s needs.

  • Horses used for recreational purposes still get sore! I recommend a 4-6-week schedule but again it all comes down to your horses individual needs.

  • The athlete competing in moderate training programs and periodic competitions can benefit from being massaged 1-2 times per month.

  • The elite athletes that have heavier workloads and compete in frequent competitions can benefit from being massaged 2-4 times per month.

Things to remember

  • A consistent massage regimen keeps you aware of any abnormalities or soreness your horse may be having.

  • Always consult your veterinarian before beginning a new treatment program.

  • Massage is NOT a substitute for veterinary medicine.
